CommonLit Archive Spark Reading Growth in Your District with CommonLit Formative Insights

You might already be familiar with CommonLit.org, a free website which includes over 2,000 English/Spanish reading lessons for grades 3–12. CommonLit.org has become a go-to resource for English, Science, and Social Studies teachers who are looking for high-quality poems, short stories, and informational texts.

CommonLit materials are accessible in both print-ready and digital formats. Digital CommonLit teachers have come to love the features on our free website including: read-aloud, translation into over 30 languages, and scaffolded reading comprehension questions. These features provide teachers with more opportunities to differentiate instruction and support all learners in the classroom.

Our tools are also proven and research-based; a 2019 report showed that:

  • Students who complete more CommonLit assignments experience greater gains in reading performance,
  • Increased CommonLit usage is associated with more students at proficient or mastery level on a state assessment,
  • Students at Title I schools experience greater gains on CommonLit, and
  • SPED students who complete more CommonLit assignments experience greater gains than their peers.

In addition to our free reading program, CommonLit offers two paid programs for schools and districts: CommonLit Formative Insights and CommonLit’s Distance Learning Support Package. In this blog post, we’ll be focusing on CommonLit Formative Insights.

CommonLit Formative Insights

We offer CommonLit Formative Insights to help schools and districts effectively and seamlessly roll out CommonLit’s reading program. This affordable program costs just $2,000 per school and includes:

  • Exclusive access to CommonLit’s Professional Development Portal that features self-paced digital modules,
  • A combination of live and recorded virtual trainings for teachers and administrators,
  • Rostering support via Clever or Google Classroom, and
  • School-wide data reports to track usage of CommonLit and student achievement.

CommonLit’s Professional Development Portal

CommonLit’s Professional Development Portal will include over 20 trainings that focus on best practices for using CommonLit’s digital program. These self-paced training modules are designed with best practices in mind. Each training includes helpful tips for navigating CommonLit.org, real-life classroom examples, and an application task.

These trainings are designed to be flexible and can be facilitated by an instructional leader or can be completed independently by teachers. Each training will follow a similar, easy-to-use format.

Live Virtual Training

With CommonLit’s personalized and recorded trainings, our team will work closely with yours to ensure that all teachers know how to effectively choose lessons from CommonLit’s digital library, navigate and leverage CommonLit’s lesson planning tools, create digital lessons, and use CommonLit’s digital data displays to effectively choose future lessons.

As a team, we also pride ourselves on our commitment to customer service. Terri Bradshaw, a secondary reading coach from Blount County, Tennessee recently said, “The CommonLit team has been amazing … You have been more than helpful. The response time has been really fast for any technical questions.”

Rostering with Clever or Google Classroom

Purchasing Formative Insights saves teachers and administrators precious time. We work with teams to implement the student rostering solution that works best for their teachers and students.

With Clever and Google Classroom, roster management is made easy. Students can quickly log in to CommonLit via Single Sign-On and teachers can focus on instruction (instead of resetting student passwords).

CommonLit’s Formative Insights data dashboard helps administrators monitor student and teacher usage, student performance by lesson and by standard.

Each reading passage in the CommonLit library includes approximately 5–8 standards-aligned text-dependent questions. With access to CommonLit’s formative data tracking tools, teachers and administrators can closely monitor trends, set goals for students, and adjust instruction to better meet the needs of all learners.
